Elmer G. Osterhoudt  Family
from
Los Angeles City Directories

These listings are from the Los Angeles California city directories. The directories contain a listing of business concerns and private citizens. They are not "phone books," but where possible they show the phone number. A reverse lookup of Crockett Blvd in 1927 shows only one household on the block where the Osterhoudt's lived had a phone. (It was at 8002 Crockett Blvd.) There are no entries listed for the Osterhoudt's prior to 1916. There are no Osterhoudt entries listed where the year is missing in the table below. There are no entries for "Alice Newman."

The directories do not show everyone who lived at the address. For instance, in 1940 Melvin, Charles and Merlin all list their address as 8019 ½ Crockett Blvd on their draft cards. Their phone number was LA 9819. The name of the person referenced at that address is Alice Newman. Not only don't they appear in the 1939 directory, there is no entry whatsoever for 8019 Crockett Blvd in 1940.

Note: William and Wilbert are the same person - Elmer's father.

Some notes about the addresses: 8011 Crockett Blvd no longer exists. In 1972 the house currently at 8013 Crockett Blvd was built on two lots, lots 24 and 25. Lot 24 would have once been 8011 Crockett Blvd

8019 Crockett Blvd was built in 1922, according to the property records. In 1928 it was enlarged to a "multi-family residence" with the addition of a duplex. This is reflected in the 8019 ½ address. The addition was actually built in 1925 (see below). There appears to be an apartment in the rear with the duplex in the front. MAP

In 1930, 8019 ½ was occupied by John and Mary Rogers, and their son Rex. (Data from the 1930 Census)

The curb shows there are three addresses at the Crockett Blvd property.

Interior of 8019 1/2 Crockett Boulevard

These pictures of 8019 ½ Crockett Blvd were found at apartments dot com. Not surprising, the interior of the apartment has been renovated and almost all the history has been eradicated. Judging by the amount of paint on the bathroom door, and the molding around the bathroom and closet doors, these are original doors installed by Wilbert and John. The rest of the pictures on the site had no historical value.

The Property Class is "Three units." The description is "Second level unit with its own front porch." It was built in 1922. The duplex in the front was built in 1928 and doesn't have an upper porch, these pictures are of the building in the back.

Wilbert and John Osterhoudt built 8019 ½ Crockett Blvd. in 1925. The date of 1925 is significant because on February 6 of that year, Ada May Osterhoudt died of pneumonia as she was being carried by her father from the old house to the new house. According to Donna Olson (daughter of Wilda Osterhoudt) the original house at 8019 was a long narrow structure running from the front to the back of the property. Her memory of it is that it resembled a trailer in its dimensions. This building burnt down in the late 1960s or early '70s, taking the life of it's occupant, a woman named Ethel.

8007 Crockett Blvd

This house at 8007 Crockett Blvd. resembles Donna's description of the house at 8019. It's narrow and trailer-like, and extends the length of the property. This house was built in 1924.  There must have been several homes like this on the block in the 1920s.
